Enforcement Unit

The Malta Transport Authority is expected by Law to ensure that the land transport facilities meet efficiency and safety standards.

To meet these obligations, the Authority has to:

Enforce standards and safeguards on all aspects of land transport

In this respect, an Enforcement Unit was set up within the Public Transport Directorate. This unit is regulated by L.N. 101 of 1992 which defines the Powers and Duties in relation to the Public Transport only.

This Unit has the OBLIGATION to:

  • Ensure that all Public Transport sectors operate in a way that is safe and efficient to commuters
  • Provide assistance to commuters via members of the Enforcement Unit at City Gate terminus
  • Ensure that all operators in the Public Transport sector abide by the prescribed Law and Regulations
  • Bring all defaulters before the Courts/Tribunals
  • Follow up complaints and take action when necessary
  • Recently, as required by local and EU related requirements, hold Roadside tests.

As an immediate measure to cater for this added responsibility:

  • A ROADSIDE CHECKS team was set up

To date, in conjunction with the Police and MEPA officials, various checks were conducted, throughout Malta and Gozo, in line with EU directives.
